Oli aika läksiäisten - It was time for goodbye party

Kun jotkut aiemmat vapaaehtoiset miettivät lähdön lähestyessä miksi pitäisi viettää läksiäisiä, ihmettelin aina tuota ajatusta. Olin nimittäin aina sitä mieltä, että tietysti meidän täytyy pitää läksiäisjuhlat jokaiselle. Kuitenkin oman lähtöpäiväni lähestyessä ajattelin toisinaan samoin kuin joku muukin aiemmin. Miksi pitäisi juhlia sitä, että lähden kohta, jätän kaiken Kreikassa koetun taakse ja joudun sanomaan heipat sen hetkiselle perheelleni eli kämppiksilleni ja muille, joihin sain tutustua? Vaikka tämä ajatus kävi joskus mielessä, tottakai halusin kuitenkin pitää omat läksiäiset ja juhlia yhdessä muiden kanssa. Jos ei sitten kotiin lähtemisen vuoksi, niin ainakin Kreikassa vietetyn ikimuistoisen ajan kunniaksi!

When some previous volunteers were thinking about why to have a goodbye party when their homecoming came closer, I was wondering that kind of thought. My opinion was always that of course we have to have a goodbye party for everyone. However, when my departure date came closer I was also thinking sometimes the same like somebody else earlier. Why should we celebrate that I am leaving soon, I have to leave everything behind that I have experienced in Greece and I need to say goodbye for my current family, for my flatmates and the others who I met? Although this thought came to my mind sometimes, of course I wanted to have my own goodbye party and celebrate with the others. If not because of going home but at least for the honor of memorable time that I have spent in Greece!

Meillä oli kämppisteni kanssa tapana leipoa ja kokata kaikenlaisia herkkuja juhliimme. Myös tällä kertaa jokainen valmisti jotain läksiäisiin. Pöytämme oli tuttuun tapaan täynnä suolaisia ja makeita herkkuja, joissa usein näkyi eri maille tyypilliset maut. Yleensä ruokaa oli tosiaan riittävästi ja sitä jäi aina myös seuraavalle päivälle niinkuin myös minun juhlissani. Aamulla oli ilo nauttia luksusaamiasta eikä vain perinteistä kaurapuuroa, muroja tai leipää! Jollakin tapaa jäin kaipaamaan yhteisöllisestä asumisestamme toisinaan erittäin kiireistä keittiötä. Yleensä kun leivon, tarvitsen tilaa ja rauhallisen ympäristön. Kreikassa monen ihmisen kanssa opin kuitenkin kokkaamaan täydessä keittiössä, etenkin juhliin valmistautuessa sekä keksimään luovia ratkaisuja, missä astiassa tehdä taikinaa ja mistä löytää tilaa kaikille tavaroille leipomishetkellä. Välillä todella tuntui, että olimme kuin Masterchef keittiössä. Puhalsimme aina silti yhteen hiileen ja lopputuloksena oli aina maukkaita herkkuja! 

We used to bake and cook all types of delicious food for our partys with my flatmates. Also this time everyone prepared something for the goodbye party. As usual, our table was full of salty and sweet food where you could usually taste typical flavors for the different countries. We had often enough food and there were always some leftovers for the next day like we had also from my party. In the morning it was nice to enjoy the luxury breakfast, not only traditional oat porridge, cereals or bread! Somehow I miss from our community the kitchen that was sometimes very busy. Usually when I bake I need space and peaceful environment. However, in Greece I learned to cook with lot of people in full kitchen especially when preparing food for all the partys. I had to figure out also some creative solutions, like in which bowl to make pastry and where to find space for all the stuff when baking. Sometimes it really felt that we were like in Masterchef kitchen. Still we were always working together and as a result we had always delicious food!

Kämppikseni tekemät tuulihatut suklaakastikkeella ja itse tekemäni voisilmäpullat. Kiitos työkaverille reseptistä! Niistä tuli maukkaita, vaikka luulin aluksi taikinan epäonnistuneen.

Aloitimme illanvieton yllätyslahjallani, jonka sain muistoksi muilta. Melkein tuli tippa linssiin, kun sain nähdä, kuulla ja kokea lahjani sisällön. Se oli nimittäin aivan ihana video, jonka kaikki sen hetkiset kämppäkaverini ja muutama kreikkalainen tuttavani olivat yhdessä kuvanneet minulle. Olin hyvin iloinen saadessani tämän lahjan, jonka tekemiseen on käytetty paljon aikaa ja vaivaa, ja josta jää minulle ikuinen muisto elämysrikkaasta ajasta Kreikassa. Videosta pitivät paljon myös ne, jotka ovat nähneet sen täällä Suomessa. Saamani lahja on minulle siis hyvin tärkeä, joten en voi muuta sanoa kuin Bravo ystäväni ja suuri Kiitos! :)

We started the evening with my surprise gift which I got as a memory from others. A teardrop came almost to my eye when I had the opportunity to see, hear and experience what the present included. It was so lovely video that all of my flatmates at that time and some greek people had filmed together for me. I was very happy to get this present, it has taken lot of time and effort when doing it. I will have everlasting memory of unforgettable time in Greece by this video. Also those who have seen the present here in Finland liked it very much. This gift that I got is very important for me so I can't be without saying Bravo my friends and a big Thank you! :)

Läksiäisiini mahtui iloa ja naurua sekä haikeutta ja kyyneleitä. Niin se vain on, että ihmiset tekevät juhlan, vaikka emme voineetkaan tanssia tekemäni soittolistan hittien tahtiin nettikatkoksen takia. Pidin läksiäisjuhlistani paljon ja haluan vielä kerran kiittää niitä, jotka olivat niissä mukana! Täytyy sanoa, että olin todella onnekas saadessani tutustua teihin ja jakaa arjen ilot ja surut kanssanne. Toivottavasti näemme vielä :) Kippis meille!

My goodbye party included joy and laugh and also sadness and tears. It is true, that people makes the celebration although we couldn't dance to the music of the playlist that I made because of internet break. I liked very much my goodbye party and I want to thank you once more those who were there! I must say that I was so lucky to get to know you and share the happy and sad things of the everyday life with you. Hopefully we will see again :) Kippis for us!

Aurinkoinen lauantai Helsingissä ja vähän muuta - Sunny Saturday in Helsinki and little bit more

Viimein koitti päivä, jolloin pääsin käymään Helsingissä Kreikan reissun jälkeen ja vielä pitkämatkalaisen ystäväni kanssa. Yleensä vierailen siellä lähes viikoittain, joten pääkaupunkimme on muodostunut minulle kuuden vuoden aikana tärkeäksi ja myös kotoisaksi paikaksi. Pidän Helsingistä paljon monestakin syystä. Ensinnäkin se on mielestäni kompaktin kokoinen. Se on oikeasti kaupunki, vaikka onkin paljon pienempi verrattuna moneen muuhun eurooppalaiseen pääkaupunkiin. Helsingissä pystyy hyvin liikkumaan jalkaisin, mikä on minulle tärkeää erityisesti uusissa kaupungeissa käydessä. Kävellessä pystyy hahmottamaan kaupunkia paremmin ja näkemään paljon enemmän kuin esimerkiksi maan alla matkustaessa. Ratikkaan on kyllä mukava toisinaan istahtaa, mutta silti kaupungin kokeminen raikkaassa ilmassa omalla vauhdilla on itselleni mieluisampaa.

Finally the day came when I visited Helsinki after trip to Greece and I was lucky to spend this day with my friend who lives far away. Usually I go almost weekly to Helsinki so our capital city has become important and also cosy place for me during six years. I like it for many reasons. First of all it's compact sized. It is a real city although it's much smaller than many other European capital cities. In Helsinki you can easily move around on foot which is important for me especially when visiting in new cities. By walking you can learn better the city and see much more compared to travelling under the ground. Sometimes it's nice to sit in the tram but still it makes more fun for me to explore the city in fresh air with my own speed.

Helsingissä riittää joka kerta mielenkiintoista tekemistä ja nähtävää. Viime kerralla kävelin leppoisasti Kasvitieteellisessä puutarhassa, kun kuulin tuttujen biisien kantautuvan korviini. Suuntasin musiikkia kohti ja yhtäkkiä löysin itseni liikuntatapahtumasta Kaisaniemen puistosta, jossa Apulannalla oli ilmaiskonsertti. Ehdin kuulla vain muutaman kappaleen, mutta ilahduin siitä kuitenkin kovasti. Kasvitieteellinen puutarha Kaisaniemessä on normaalisti rauhallinen ja ihana, täynnä kukkia sekä omena- ja luumupuita, mutta nyt se oli remontin vallassa, joten moni kuva jäi ottamatta.

There is every time something interesting to do and see in Helsinki. Last time I was walking peacefully in Botanical Garden of Kaisaniemi when I heard some familiar songs. I decided to follow the music and suddenly I found myself in some kind of sport event in Kaisaniemi park. The famous Finnish rock band called Apulanta had free concert there. I heard only few songs but still I was happy of this chance. A Botanical Garden in Kaisaniemi is normally calm and more beautiful, full of flowers and apple and plum trees. This time they were doing renovation so many nice pictures were not taken.

Mielestäni kaupungista pitää löytyä kahvilakulttuuria. Rakastan kahviloita ja niitä riittää moneen makuun myös Helsingistä. Yksi lempikahviloistani on Regatta: pieni puinen ja punainen mökki meren rannassa, jossa on yksilöllinen ja leikittelevä sisustus sisällä ja ulkona. Regatassa voi paistaa makkaraa nuotiolla ympäri vuoden ja katsella keinutuolista merimaisemaa sekä ottaa vauhdit napakelkan kyydissä talvella. Maininnan arvoista on myös ystävällinen palvelu, sillä ostokset voi maksaa vaikka seuraavalla kerralla, jos ei ole sillä hetkellä sattunut käteistä mukaan. Korttia ei tässä kahvilassa hyväksytä, mikä tulee varmasti monelle uudelle vieraalle yllätyksenä. Lisäksi santsikupista annetaan viisi senttiä asiakkaalle takaisin. Kannattaa siis käydä tutustumassa! Viime kerralla Helsingissä päätimme jonottaa kuitenkin Starbucksin Frappucinoja, joten alla olevat kuvat Regatasta ovat parin vuoden takaa.

I think that there has to be cafe culture in a city. I love cafes and there are many cafes for many kind of taste also in Helsinki. One of my favourite cafes is called Regatta. It is a small wooden and red cottage next to the sea and it has unique and playful style inside and outside. In Cafe Regatta it's possible to grill sausage in campfire outside through the year, watch for the sea view while sitting in rocking chair and have a ride in a snow sledge that is making circle on the ice. Worth of mentioning is also friendly service in this cafe because you can pay next time if you don't have cash with you at the moment. They don't accept cards for paying which is surely surprise for many new guests. Additionally five cents is given back for customers of the second cup of coffee. So it is worth to go and explore this cafe! Last time when visiting Helsinki we decided to wait in a line for Starbucks' Frappucino so the pictures below from Regatta are two years old.

Olen tottunut luonnon läheisyyteen, joten Helsingissä pidän erityisesti siitä, että luonto on osa keskustaa. Tämä kaupunki saa oman lisämausteen ehdottomasti siitä, että sitä ympäröivät meri ja järvet sekä saaret ja puistot. Mielestäni on mukavaa, kun kaupungin syke ja luonnon rauha ovat tasapainossa. Ne täydentävät toisiaan ja tällöin kaupunki on moniulotteinen. Kaupoilla kiertelemisen jälkeen on kiva vain kävellä meren rantaan ja piknikille lähteminenkin on helppoa.

I am used to live close to the nature so in Helsinki I like particularly that nature is part of the center. This city gets definitely little bit more taste because it is surrounded by sea, lakes, islands and parks. I think it is nice when beat of the city and peace of the nature are connected and in balance in Helsinki. They complements each other and in this case the city is wide-ranging. After shopping it's fun just to walk to the seaside and going for a picnic is also easy.

Heippa Kreikka, moi Suomi!

Kaikki hyvä päättyy aikanaan, niin myös vapaaehtoistyöprojektini Xylokastrossa Kreikassa pari viikkoa sitten. Puoli vuotta meni todella nopeasti, aivan hujauksessa! Vasta pohdin tammikuussa lähdenkö vai en, kun tieto hyväksytystä projektista tuli. En edes halua kuvitella, mitä kaikkea olisin menettänyt, jos en olisikaan lähtenyt EVS-projektiin mukaan. 

Muutaman asian voisin tuoda kuitenkin esille, jotka jäivät päällimmäisenä mieleen reissusta. Ensimmäisenä on tietysti kaikki tapaamani ihanat ihmiset toisista maista sekä Kreikasta, olitte aivan mahtavaa seuraa enkä unohda teitä koskaan, olette aina miun mielessä! Jos en olisi lähtenyt, olisi minulta jäänyt näkemättä ja kokematta monipuolinen sekä kaunis Kreikka: meri sinisen eri sävyissä, vuoret, erilaiset rannat, vesiputoukset sekä tuikkiva tähtitaivas ja kirkas kuu ja paljon muuta. En olisi ehkä ikinä opiskellut kreikkaa ja oppinut kommunikoimaan edes auttavasti sillä kielellä enkä saanut kokemusta päiväkodin toiminnasta toisessa maassa. Tuskin olisin ikinä asunut yhdeksän kämppiksen kanssa ja viettänyt intensiivisesti aikaa heidän kanssaan. Minulta olisi jäänyt väliin myös monet unohtumattomat matkakokemukset, kuten mönkijällä ajelu vuorilla, lava-auton lavalla sekä rekan kyydissä matkustaminen, liftaaminen sekä nukkuminen rannalla, joita tein ensimmäisen kerran elämässäni Kreikassa ollessani. Onneksi siis olin rohkea ja lähdin!

Voin helposti sanoa, että EVS Xylokastrossa oli yksi parhaimpia elämänkokemuksiani, joten heippojen sanominen ei ollut lainkaan mukavaa. Myös hetki, jolloin lentokoneen pyörät irtosivat Kreikan maasta oli todellakin surullinen. Silloin kunnolla tajusin, että taas sitä mennään ja jotain arvokasta jää taakse. Haikea fiilis tarkoitti kohdallani myös sitä, että reissu on onnistunut. Se, jos mikä on tärkeintä :) Onneksi olen kuitenkin uutta sukupolvea ja voin pitää yhteyttä muihin muutenkin kuin vain kirjeitse. 

Olen kuitenkin onnekas voidessani sanoa, että lopulta kotiinkin on ollut aina kiva palata. Niin oli myös nyt, sillä olihan vanhempani ja veljeni sekä sukulaisia ja ystäviä minua vastassa kotikaupungissani! Elämä ja ympäristö ovat tietysti erilaisia täällä Suomessa viime puolivuotiseen verrattuna, mutta kyllä sitä kaikkeen tottuu, niinkuin totuin kreikkalaiseen elämänrytmiinkin. 

Bye bye Greece, Hi Finland!

Everything good comes to an end, also my volunteer project in Xylokastro in Greece couple weeks ago. Half a year went very fast, it was quick as a flash! In January I just thought should I go when I got information about approved project. I don't want to even imagine what I would have missed if I wouldn't have taken a part into this EVS-project. 

However, I could still bring out some things that I have on the top in my mind about the trip. First of all there are of course all great people that I met from other countries and from Greece. You were awesome company and I will never forget you. You will always be in my mind! If I had not gone to Greece I wouldn't have seen and experienced diverse and beautiful Greece, the sea in different colours of blue, mountains, different kinds of beaches, waterfalls, clear sky of twinkling stars and bright moon and many more things. Probably I would have never studied greek or learned how to communicate in this language even little bit. Moreover, I would have never got experience from kindergarten in other country. I think that I would have never lived with nine flatmates and spent time with them so intensively. I would have also missed many unforgettable experiences in travelling like driving with quad bike in mountains, travelling on top of the pickup and in truck. In Greece I experienced also hitchhiking and sleeping on the beach for the first time in my life. So it was worth to be brave and go!

I can easily say that EVS in Xylokastro was one of the best experiences in my life so it was not nice at all to say good bye. Also the moment when the airplane took off from the ground in Greece was really sad. During that moment I realized properly that I am going again and something precious will stay behind. This nostalgic feeling meant for me also that the half a year trip in Greece was successful and that is the most important fact :) Luckily I am though new generation so I can keep in touch with others also in other ways than by old letters.

Anyway, I am lucky when I can say that finally it has always been nice to come back home. It happened also now because my parents, brothers and some of my relatives and friends were waiting for me in my hometown! The life and environment are for sure different here in Finland if I compare them to the last six months but usually everyone gets used to everything, like I got used also to rhythm of greek life.
