Vaellus satumaiseen Meteoraan -The hike to the magical Meteora (Μετέωρα)

Ennen Ateenan EVS seminaaria päätimme tehdä päiväreissun Meteoraan Koillis-Kreikkaan. Meteora on luostarialue Kalambakan kunnassa, jossa kohoaa useita luonnon muovaamia kalliotorneja noin 400 metrin korkeudessa. Meteorassa on kuusi luostaria, jotka on rakennettu jyrkkien kallioiden päälle. Tämä tekee paikasta erikoisen ja antaa kävijälleen varmasti unohtumattoman kokemuksen. 

Lähdimme Meteoraan yöjunalla Ateenasta. Tällä kertaa matkaan lähtivät kanssani K, E ja G :) Junamatka onkin jo kokonaan toinen tarina. Vaikka asemalla ei ollut muistaakseni kuin yksi laituri käytössä, oli oikeaan junaan nouseminen haasteellista puutteellisen tiedotuksen takia eikä junassakaan ollut riittävästi opasteita. Kysyimme ainakin kolme kertaa eri henkilöiltä vieressä olevan junan päämäärää. Kenenkään mielestä se ei ollut meidän junamme, kunnes eräs työntekijöistä ilmoitti sen todella olevan junamme. Onneksi emme uskoneet heti ensimmäistä vaan jatkoimme kyselemistä!

Before EVS seminar in Athens we decided to do a day trip to Meteora in northeast Greece. Meteora is a monastery region in the municipality of Kalambaka where many rock towers rises up to the height of about 400 metres. Those rock towers have formed by the nature. There are six monasteries in Meteora, build to the top of the rocks. This makes the place special and gives definitely an unforgettable experience for its visitor.

We went to Meteora by night train from Athens. This time K, E and G took part to the trip with me :) The train trip was entirely different story. Although the train station had only one platform for use as I can remember, it was still challenging to get to the right train. It was like this because of deficient information and there were not enough signs in the train. We asked atleast three times from different person the destination of the train that was next to us. Everyone said it's not our train, when finally one of the staff informed us that it's really our train. It was good to continue asking, not to believe the first one!

Kalambakan asemalla lepäsimme ja söimme vatsamme täyteen kämppisteni tekemää soselaatikkoa. Sen voimalla jaksoimme aloittaa urakan kohti Meteoraa!

In Kalambaka station we rest and ate our stomachs full of  casserole from smashed vegetables made by my flatmates. From that we got the power to start our task to climb up to Meteora!

Saavuimme pitkän ja uuvuttavan junamatkan jälkeen perille Kalambakaan aamuvarhain ennen auringonnousua. Unet jäivät todella vähiin meluavien matkustajien sekä junanvaihdon vuoksi. Tämä matka oli ensimmäinen tekemäni kaukojunamatka ulkomailla. Muistan hyvin, kuinka juna piti tupakkatauon keskellä maaseudun pimeyttä. Ei kotimaassani vain ole enää tällaista mahdollisuutta :D Perillä katselin mykistyneenä taivaaseen kohoavia Meteoran kallioita aamun valjetessa. Ne näyttivät valtavilta ja sitä toki ovatkin. Ennen Kreikkaan menoa en tiennyt mitään Meteorasta ja yhtäkkiä sain tilaisuuden kokea näyn, jota en ole missään muualla kokenut. 

Päätimme kiivetä jalkaisin luostareille, joihin pääsee joko bussilla, autolla tai Apostolin kyydillä. En ikinä uskonut voivani kiivetä Meteoran kallioille, mutta sen tein. Pääsin jälleen kerran toteamaan, että kävellessä näkee niin paljon enemmän kuin vain tietä pitkin ajaessa, etenkin jos poikkeaa päätieltä metsäpolulle.

We arrived in Kalambaka early morning before sunrise after long and exhausting train travel. We didn't sleep much because of the noisy travellers and one train change. This trip was the first long distance train travel in other country that I have made. I remember well when our train had smoking break between the darkness in a countryside. In my home country we don't have this kind of opportunity anymore :D In our destination I was speechless when watching Meteora's rocks that rises up to sky during the dawn. They seemed huge and so they are of course. Before going to Greece I didn't know anything about Meteora and suddenly I had chance to feel the sight that I have never experienced anywhere else. 

We decided to walk up to the monasteries that you can reach by bus, car or Apostles ride. I never believed that I can climb to Meteora's rocks but I did it. I noticed again that by foot you can see much more than driving along the road, especially if you step out of the main road to the forest path.

Vierailimme jokainen kahdessa tai kolmessa luostarissa nimeltään Moni Varlaam, Moni Megalou Meteorou ja Moni Agias Rousanou. Luostareihin tuli pukeutua hameisiin ja olkapäät tuli peittää. Sisäänpääsystä maksoimme noin kolme euroa/luostari. Meteora on nykyään suosittu matkailukohde Kreikassa ja siellä oli keskipäivällä jo useampi turistibussillinen matkaajia. Luostarit olivat hienoja ja erityisesti isoin luostari oli mielestäni eniten käymisen arvoinen. Siellä oli useampi museo, joista löytyi esimerkiksi vanhoja asuja sekä taloustavaroita. Näin myös ison hyllyn, joka oli täynnä pääkalloja. 

Everyone of us visited two or three monasteries named Moni Varlaam, Moni Megalou Meteorou and Moni Agias Rousanou. We had to wear dresses and shoulders had to be covered when going to monastery. We paid about three euros/monastery of entrance. Nowadays Meteora is a popular tourist attraction in Greece and at noon there were already several tourist buses of travellers. Monasteries were nice and especially the biggest monastery was most worth to visit, I think. There were several museums where you can find for example old costumes and stuff for the house. I saw also a big shelf that was full of skulls.

In Meteora I met maybe the hungriest cat in Greece and it had still energy to go actively into our bags.

Meteoran luostarikallioilla tunsin oloni koko paikan valtiaaksi, kun taas alhaalla suurten kallioiden ympäröimänä tunsin itseni hyvin pieneksi. Näkymät olivat molemmista suunnista upeat eikä sellaisia tule vastaan ihan joka päivä. Kalambakan asukkaille kalliot ovat tietysti arkipäivää, toivon vain että myös he osaavat arvostaa tuota ainutlaatuista maisemaa. Meteora tarjoaa varmasti erilaisia elämyksiä riippuen vuodenajasta. Vaikka päivä oli meidän kohdallamme polttava, nautimme siitä kuitenkin täysillä! 

On monastery rocks of Meteora I felt myself a lord of the whole place. In the other hand, when I was down, next to these big rocks I felt myself so little. The views were awesome from both directions and you can't see those views each day. For the inhabitants of Kalambaka they are for sure everyday life, but I hope that they can appreciate that unique view. Meteora offers certainly different experiences depending on the season. Although the day was very hot when we visited Meteora, we enjoyed it still 100 %!

Junamme lähti takaisin Ateenaan viiden aikaan iltapäivällä, joten ehdimme hyvin kierrellä ympäriinsä, kun lähdimme matkaan seitsemän aikaan aamulla. Palasimme alas Kalambakaan metsäpolkua pitkin, jossa kohtasimme suloisen kilpikonnan. Kilpparin matka taisi kestää hieman pidempään kuin meidän tunnin kestävä kävely alas. Oli kyllä mahtava reissu, voisin lähteä mielelläni uudestaan!

Our train left back to Athens around five o'clock afternoon so we had well time to go around, because we started our hike at seven in the morning. We came back down to Kalambaka along forest path where we met a cute turtle. Its journey would have taken little bit longer than our one hour walk down. It was really awesome trip, I could go again!

Muumit ovat ihania ja täynnä viisaita elämänohjeita, kuten ylempänä voit huomata! Kun löysin tuon sarjakuva stripin, miulle tuli siitä heti mieleen muutamat Kreikassa tekemämme yön yli reissut. Levitimme vain viltit ja makuupussit kiville, hiekalle tai aurinkotuoleille ja kas siinä meillä olikin ilmainen hotellimajoitus. Mehän elämme vain kerran!

Moomins are wonderful and full of wise advice for the life as you may notice above! When I found that comic strip, it reminded me of some over night trips that we made in Greece. We just spread the blankets and sleeping bags on the stones, sand or sunbeds and there we had free hotel accommodation. We live only once!

Blogin kesäisistä tunnelmista vaihdetaan nyt hetkeksi talven fiilistelyyn! Lunta on täällä eteläisessä Suomessa vasta vähän, mutta valkoinen maa tuo silti lisää valoa pimeisiin päiviin. Toivotaan, että saadaan vielä lisää lunta, jotta joulukin tuntuisi oikealta joululta myös sään puolesta. Kuten eräs ystäväni sanoi: Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.. :)

Let's move from the blog's sunny atmosphere to winter feelings for a while! Here in southern Finland there is just little bit of snow but white ground gives us still more light to dark days. Let's hope that we will have more snow, so that Christmas would feel a real Christmas also when talking about the weather. As one of my friends said: Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.. :)

Kaunis Hydran saari - Beautiful island of Hydra (Υδρα)

Tervetuloa Saronisten saarien paratiisisaarelle Hydralle!

Welcome to the Saronic Island's paradise island Hydra!

Zakynthokselta matkamme jatkui vieraitteni kanssa Hydralle Ateenan kautta. Hydra (lausutaan Idra) sijaitsee vain tunnin lauttamatkan päässä Piraeuksen satamasta, joten kyseinen saari sopi meille erinomaisesti päiväreissun kohteeksi ennen äitini ja tätini paluuta takaisin Suomeen. Hydra on pieni saari, jossa ei ole varsinaisia teitä, ja jossa moottoriliikenne on kielletty. Ihmisten ja tavaroiden kuljetus toimii siellä aaseilla sekä venetakseilla. Tämän vuoksi saari onkin todella hyvä valinta hiljaisuutta ja rauhaa kaipaavalle matkustajalle. Mielestäni auto- ja mopokielto tekee saaresta juuri ainutlaatuisen. Ilman kovaäänistä liikennettä on paljon mukavampi liikkua jalkaisin ja ihailla upeita maisemia eikä tarvitse pelätä jäävänsä esimerkiksi mopon alle. 

From Zakynthos our trip continued with my guests to Hydra via Athens. Hydra is located only one hour ferry trip from Piraeus port, so this island was an ideal day trip destination before my mother's and aunt's return back to Finland. Hydra is a small island where are no actual roads and where the motor transport is forbidden. Donkeys and boat taxis can carry people and belongings there. That's why the island is very good choice for travellers who wants to have silence and peace on their vacation. I think that the prohibition of cars and mopeds makes Hydra so unique. It's much more comfortable to walk and watch the views without loud traffic and when you don't have to be afraid of get hit by a moped.

Matkustimme Hydralle kantosiipialuksella, jossa olin itse ensimmäistä kertaa. Heti aluksen saavuttua perille tajusin, kuinka kaunis ja erilainen tämä saari olikaan muihin Kreikan saariin verrattuna. Kaikki vierailemani saaret olivat tietysti hienoja paikkoja, mutta Hydra jäi kuitenkin erityisen hyvin mieleeni. Siellä talot olivat sopusoinnussa toistensa kanssa vuoristoisessa maastossa ja kävelypolkuja oli monia. Pidin myös siitä, että saari ei ollut sinä aikana täynnä matkalaisia, jolloin saimme nauttia päiväreissustamme rauhassa. 

We travelled to Hydra by hydrofoil and it was my first time in that kind of vehicle. Right after the ship arrived to destination, I realized how beautiful and different this island was compared to other islands in Greece. All islands that I visited were of course nice places but still I remember Hydra particularly well. Houses were there in a harmony with each other in a mountainous landscape and there were many walking paths. I liked also that the island was not full of travellers in that period so we could enjoy our day trip in peace.

Hydra ei taida olla rantalomailijan ykköskohde pienten ja kivirantojen vuoksi, mutta kun kerran Kreikassa oltiin, niin toki meidän oli otettava uimapukumme matkaan mukaan! Se oli hyvä päätös, sillä oli ihanan virkistävää pulahtaa uimaan hellepäivänä etenkin kalliorannalta portaita pitkin. Hydralla on vain yksi kylä, joten kävelimme rantatietä muutaman kerran pitäen taukoja näköalapaikoilla ja rantakahviloissa. 

Hydra is not probably the first destination for those who are looking for beach holiday because there are only small beaches with stones. Still because we were in Greece we had to take our swimming suits of course to the trip! It was good decision because swimming on a hot day was so lovely and refreshing, especially from the ladders on a rocky beach. There is only one village in Hydra so we were walking few times on seaside and resting sometimes in viewpoints and in seafront cafes.

Muistan vieläkin, kun tätini sanoi Zakynthoksella lähtöpäivänä, että jäädään tänne vielä. Toki olisi ollut mukava viettää siellä enemmän aikaa, mutta Hydralle päästyäni olin onnellinen, että päätimme mennä sinne edes päiväksi. Myös vieraani olivat lopulta erittäin tyytyväisiä Hydraan. "Onpa täällä kaunista," muistan heidän sanonneen punaviinilasit kädessään :) Kaihoisasti näitä maisemia muistelen ja haaveilen pääseväni joskus taas tuonne kirkkaan auringon alle Hydran kallioille!

I still remember when my aunt said in Zakynthos on our departure day that let's stay here. For sure it would have been nice to spend there more time. Still I was happy when we got to Hydra that we decided to go there even for one day. Finally my guests were also very satisfied with Hydra. "It's so beautiful here," I remember them saying with red wine glasses in their hands :) It is nostalgic to remember these views and dream of getting there again under bright sun to Hydra's rocks!

Zakynthos (Ζάκυνθος)

Kun muistelen matkaamme Zakynthoksen saarelle äitini ja tätini kanssa, tulee siitä mieleeni todellinen Amazing Race! Xylokastrosta matkustimme kolmella bussilla Killinin satamaan, jolloin jännitimme ehdimmekö seuraavaan bussiin ja onko siinä enää tilaa meille. Myös bussin lähtöpaikkaa saimme etsiä juosten jonkun aikaa Patrassa. En ollut varannut meille bussilippuja sieltä satamaan, mikä osoittautui virheeksi, sillä jouduimme seisomaan ja osittain istumaan takaoven rappusilla koko matkan. Viuhkat tulivat todella tarpeeseen! Hektisen matkustamisen loppuhuipentuma oli se, kun varaamamme laivaliput eivät olleetkaan siihen laivaan, johon bussimme oli ajanut meidän matkalaukut kyydissään. Laiva oli juuri lähdössä, joten laukkuja ei voitu ottaa enää pois bussista. Laivan työntekijä vain pyysi näyttämään toisen laivan lippumme ja sanoi, että lähdetään! Lopulta olimme kuitenkin tyytyväisiä, sillä pääsimme perille Zakynthokselle tuntia suunniteltua aiemmin :D

When I am remembering our travel to Zakynthos island with my mother and aunt, a real Amazing Race comes to my mind! We travelled by three buses from Xylokastro to Killini port and during that we were nervous about catching the next bus and if we would have there any places left for us. We had to also run in Patra when searching for the next bus station. I hadn't booked bus tickets for us from there to the port and that turned out to be a mistake. We had to stand and partly sit on the stairs next to the back door for the whole bus trip. Our fans were very useful in a hot bus! The grande finale of the hectic travelling was when our already booked ship tickets were not meant to be to that ship where our bus went with our luggage inside. The ship was leaving in few minutes so we couldn't remove our luggage from the bus. The staff just asked us to show our tickets to other ship and said that let's go! Finally we were happy to get to the destination in Zakynthos one hour earlier than planned :D

Zakynthoksella olimme vain kaksi kokonaista päivää, joista ensimmäinen oli Juhannusaatto. Vuokrasimme sinä päivänä auton, joten ehdimme kiertämään saaren ja näkemään monta paikkaa omatoimisella kiertoajelulla. Kävimme moikkaamassa tien reunassa olevaa pientä vuohta maisemia ihaillen sekä katsomassa sinisille luolille lähtevän laivan "satamaa" ja  haaksirikkoutunutta laivaa Navagio rannalla. Järjestin tietämättäni vierailleni pienen vaelluksen, kun halusimme mennä katsomaan laivan hylkyä. Lähdimme seuraamaan väkijoukkoa erittäin huonoa polkua pitkin ja väitin pitkään laivan olevan edessäpäin. Aina ei kannata kuitenkaan seurata muita vaan tutkia itse oikea reitti. Navagiossa olikin näköalapaikka suoraan hylylle. Se oli sittenkin melkein suoraan edessämme, kun päätin lähteä kävelemään toiseen suuntaan huonolle polulle, oikeastaan suoraan rotkoon...

We were only two whole days in Zakynthos and the first one was Midsummer's Eve. On that day we rented a car so we had enough time to go around the island and see many places on our self made tour. We went to say hello to a small goat next to the road when enjoying the views. Also the "harbour" where a boat leaves to the blue caves and shipwreck beach in Navagio were on our list where to go with the car. I organized a small hiking for my guests without knowing it when we wanted to see the shipwreck. We started to follow people along a very bad path and I claimed long time that the shipwreck will be in the front. Still you shouldn't always follow other people but figure out the right way on your own. There were a viewpoint straight to the shipwreck in Navagio. Of course the viewpoint was straight ahead of us when I decided to walk other direction to the bad road, actually straight to the gorge...

Kävimme myös pienellä Agios Sostis saarella, jonne oli pääsymaksu 4 euroa sisältäen yhden juoman. Auringon laskiessa suuntasimme Laganaksen rannalle, jossa valekarettikilpikonnat pesivät öisin. Keräsimme simpukoita, kunnes rantavahti vihelsi meille pilliin merkiksi poistua rannalta, ettemme häiritsisi rannalle saapuvia kilppareita. Jäimme Laganakseen vielä hetkeksi seuraamaan laskeutuvia lentokoneita, jotka lensivät melkein suoraan yläpuoleltamme. 

We visited also a small island of Agios Sostis which had four euros entrance including one drink. During a sunset we went to Laganas beach where loggerhead sea turtles nests at night. We were collecting sea shells when a lifeguard whistled us to give a sign that we have to leave from the beach so we wouldn't disturb the turtles. We stayed in Laganas for a while and we were watching landing airplanes which flew almost straight above us.

Juhannuspäivää vietimme rennosti Tsilivin rannalla, joka oli vain parin sadan metrin päässä hotellistamme. Kyllä kelpasi uida kirkkaassa merivedessä ja nauttia auringosta. Samaan aikaan Suomessa sai kuulemma pitää talvitakkia neljän asteen lämpötilassa. Olimme siis onnekkaita! Tapasimme rannalla myös yhden suomalaisen Tanssii Tähtien Kanssa -ohjelman tanssinopettajan, jonka kanssa juttelimme pitkään.  

We spent Midsummer day without any worries on Tsilivi beach that was only few hundred meters from our hotel. It was perfect to swim in a clear sea water and enjoy the sun. I heard that people had to almost wear winter coats at the same time in Finland because the temperature was there only four degrees. So we were lucky! On the beach we met also one Finnish dance teacher from the Dancing with the stars TV program and we were talking long time together.

Ihmettelin aina kreikkalaista laivan lastauksen tyyliä, mutta lopulta kaikki pääsivät aina laivaan ilman onnettomuuksia
I was always wondering about greek style when going to the ship. Still at the end everybody got into the ship without accidents

Kyllä myö syötiinkin tällä reissulla, sitä ei sovi unohtaa :) Söin Tsilivin kylässä ainakin siihen mennessä parasta Kreikassa saamaani ruokaa ja palvelu oli myös todella hyvää siinä ravintolassa.

For sure we were eating also during this trip. That's something we shouldn't forget :) In Tsilivi village I ate the best food atleast until that time that I had got in Greece. Also the service was very good in that restaurant.

Vaikka Zakynthoksen matkamme olikin lyhyt, oli se silti tosi kiva reissu. Sieltä seikkailumme jatkui Ateenan kautta Hydran saarelle, josta kerron lisää seuraavassa postauksessa. Nähdään pian kaunis Hydra!

Although our trip in Zakynthos was short, it was still very nice trip. From there our adventure continued to beautiful Hydra island via Athens and I will tell more about that in next blog update. See you soon beautiful Hydra!
