Itsenäisyyspäivän juhlintaa - Celebrating Finland's Independence Day

Viime lauantaina 6.12 Suomi juhlisti 97 vuotista itsenäisyyttään. Olimme Ruotsin vallan alla vuoteen 1809 asti, minkä jälkeen kuuluimme Venäjään. 1917 kotimaamme ponnisti kartalle itsenäisenä valtiona. Onnea Suomi!

Last Saturday on 6.12 Finland celebrated it's 97. Independence Day. We belonged to Sweden until 1809 and after that we were part of Russia. 1917 our homeland jumped on the map as independent state. Congratulations Finland! 

Petroskoi Äänisen rannalla kuului Suomelle 1941-1944. Suomalaiset antoivat tuolloin kaupungille nimeksi Äänislinna.
Petroskoi in the coast of the lake Ääninen belonged to Finland  during 1914-1944. Finns called that city Äänislinna.

Itsenäisyyspäivä on itselleni tärkeä juhlapäivä. Vietimme sitä töissä lasten kanssa jo perjantaina nostaen lipun salkoon kansallislaulua laulaen. Isommat tanssivat kuin presidentin linnan juhlissa ja pienemmillä oli omat tanssit lastenlaulujen tahdissa tietysti juhla-asuihin pukeutuneina. 

Itsenäisyyspäivä sujui tänä vuonna perinteiseen tapaan. Lippu nousi salkoon vanhempieni luona, sytytimme sinivalkoiset kynttilät sekä katsoimme Itsenäisyyspäivän paraatia ja tietysti Linnan juhlia telkkarista. Pidän myös Tuntematonta sotilasta tärkeänä osana itsenäisyyspäivän juhlimista, mutta jotenkin siitä tulee lopulta katsottua vain osa. Niin kävi myös tänä vuonna leipomisen takia tai ehkä oikea syy oli sittenkin ajan organisoimattomuus. Ensi vuonna sitten parempi yritys!  

Independence Day is important day for me to celebrate. We celebrated it already on Friday with the children at work. We raised Finland's flag to the flagpole when singing our national anthem. Bigger children danced like in the celebration of President's castle. Also smaller children dressed up in better clothes and had their own prom with children's songs.

Independence Day was traditional also this year. The flag raised up to the flagpole in my parents' home and we lighted blue and white candles. We watched from TV the parade of an army and of course the celebration of President's castle. Also The Unknown Soldier movie is important part of Independence Day for me. It is originally a novel and tells about the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union. The Unknown Soldier is told from the viewpoint of ordinary Finnish soldiers. Although that movie has important meaning on Independence Day, somehow I manage to watch always only part of it. This happened also this year because of baking or maybe the right reason was the lack of organizing my time. Next year better try then!

Valonheitin oli hyvä keksintö isältäni valaista lippua pimeällä.
It was good idea from my father to light the flag when it's dark. 

Illaksi valmistin juustokakkua mustikkamarmoroinnilla ja rukiisia kylmäsavulohi-leivoksia, joissa oli pohjalla tuorejuustoa. Näiden herkkujen sekä kuohuviinin parissa istuimme telkkarin ääressä seuraamassa, kuinka presidenttipari kättelee 1800 vierastaan tervetulleiksi Linnan juhliin. Saattaa kuulostaa tylsältä, mutta perinne on aina perinne ja mielestäni on kiva katsella kauniita pukuja ja kuunnella vieraiden mielenkiintoisia haastatteluja.

For the evening I prepared cheese cake with blueberry marbling and cold smoked salmon pastry, which had cream cheese on the bottom of rye pastry. With this food we were sitting in front of television and following when president couple was shaking hands with 1800 guests and welcoming them to the Independence Day celebration in the castle. It may sound boring but tradition is always tradition and for me it's nice to watch beautiful dresses and listen to interesting interviews of the guests.

Seuraavana päivänä vangitsin auringonvalon kuvaan. Aurinko oli erittäin tervetullut, sillä koko marraskuun aikana Helsingissä paistoi aurinko vain 13 tunnin ajan!

Next day I catched the sun light to the picture. Sun was very welcome because sun shined in Helsinki only 13 hours throughout the November!




Seuraavaksi kuuntelemme Finlandia hymnin. Se on mielestäni kaunis ja sopisi hyvin Suomen kansallislauluksi.

Next we will listen Finlandia hymn. I think it's beautiful composition from Sibelius and it would be good national anthem for Finland, although it isn't.
